The adoption of the F-15 was decided in 1976 and the first unit arrived at Gifu Air Base on March 27, 1981. The F-15J at the time of its introduction was essentially an aircraft equivalent to the F-15C of the US Air Force, with some modifications specific to the Air Self-Defense Force.
