Tokyo, Sept. 8 (Jiji Press) — Nearly half of Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party lawmakers had some sort of connection to the religious group formerly known as the Unification Church, it said Thursday. the LDP.
The LDP said 179 of its 379 lawmakers had ties to the religious group or related organizations.
The party released the names of 121 of them, including political leader Koichi Hagiuda, deputy chief cabinet secretary Yoshihiko Isozaki and economic revitalization minister Daishiro Yamagiwa.
“We took the results seriously,” Prime Minister and PLD President Fumio Kishida told reporters.
He said: “We will make banning ties with groups considered problematic the basic policy of the party, so as not to trigger public distrust.” He added: “We will fully implement this policy.”
