Japan’s child abuse cases hit another high in fiscal 2021

Tokyo, Sept. 9 (Jiji Press) — The number of child abuse cases in Japan in fiscal year 2021 rose by 2,615 from the previous year to 207,659, hitting a record high for the 31st consecutive year, the Ministry of Health announced on Friday.

The number of cases handled by children’s counseling centers nationwide has steadily increased since the government began collecting the data in fiscal year 1990.

In the year ending March 2022, emotional abuse cases, including those of children witnessing domestic violence inflicted on others, numbered 124,722, up from 3,388.

The share of psychological abuse cases was around 60%, compared to around 30% ten years ago.

The number of physical abuse cases fell by 797 to 49,238, posting the first year-on-year decline in 15 years.
