Ukraine recaptures key eastern city, reshaping battle contours

A lightning Ukrainian offensive in the northeast of the country reshaped what had become a crushing war of attrition. Within days, the Russian front lines warped, troops from Moscow fled, and one village after another reverted to the yellow and blue banner of Ukraine.

Ukrainian officials said on Saturday their troops had taken the eastern town of Izium, a strategically important rail hub that Russian forces seized in the spring after a week-long bloody battle.
