Tsunami advisory issued for part of Okinawa after Taiwan earthquake

Tokyo, Sept. 18 (Jiji Press) — The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning for the Miyako and Yaeyama areas of Okinawa Prefecture in southern Japan on Sunday following a earthquake that occurred near Taiwan around 3:44 p.m. (6:44 a.m. GMT).

The maximum height of the tsunami is expected to be 1 meter.

The agency also said slight changes in sea level could be seen in the Izu island chain in Tokyo, the Ogasawara islands in the Pacific, Kochi prefecture in western Japan and the main island of Okinawa.

The earthquake near Taiwan had a magnitude of 7.2 and its focus was very shallow, the agency said.
