“Play with Digibo! features engaging digital board games with board game elements, card game elements, and tabletop talk RPG (TRPG) elements. This time we bring you Chambers of Devious Design, a battle-like digital board game where you outsmart your friends and build a secret base in order to curry favor with the boss of an evil organization.
The game was released by Redbeak Games on Steam on September 5, 2022. Redbeak Games will release Mortal Glory, a roguelite SRPG set in a fantasy world arena on January 29, 2020. Japanese language support has also been provided, and it has been well welcomed for its unique gameplay and high addiction. This job is as unique as “Mortal Glory”, and the player becomes a member of an evil organization, builds a secret base and tries to impress the boss. However, other members of the organization think the same, so they will build a secret base while pulling their legs. As for the content of this book, it is a “panel arrangement” game in which the player places tiles in order, which will be the parts of the room. The game system is similar to the classic board game “Carcassonne”, and when placing tiles, you need to connect the doors in the room. Moreover, it is possible to attack other players in this game. What kind of game is this, let’s play it now! Build a secret base of evil! As for the game modes, there are “tutorial”, “campaign” and “custom game”. In custom games, in addition to facing the AI, you can also play local interpersonal battles. Let’s start with the tutorial. The old man in the picture is the boss of the evil organization. The object of the game is to create a secret base for the boss. The “start room” is in the center of the screen, and you need to connect the room panel on the right side of the screen here. As for the placement conditions, it is necessary to connect the doors to the rooms. Each room panel has a name, type, and effect. This time, the boot room was connected to the “deluxe art collection” room. When “all doors” of the room panel are connected to other room panels, it becomes “room completion” and bonuses such as victory points are obtained. It is a system similar to Carcassonne. The bonus is different for each room, and in the case of “Luxury Art Collection” it has the effect of “increasing the room score (victory points. The green number in the center of the room panel) by the number neighbors” (“neighbors” means “adjacent rooms”, as long as the walls are adjacent, the doors do not need to be connected). Additionally, if the adjacent room type is “entertainment”, the room’s score will be increased by 1 point. Let’s fulfill the conditions as much as possible and increase the victory points. Next, connect the “Minions Motivation Lounge” to the “Luxury Art Collection”. Although it is a 4-point room, it has the effect of “+1 if there is an economy type room in the neighborhood”. “Luxury Art Collection” is an economic type, so after login it has become 5 points. Connect the “Mummy Powder Machine” room to the “Luxury Art Collection”. Now the 3 doors of the “Luxury Art Collection” are connected to the room and are “finished”. “+1 point for the number of neighbors”, so you get +3 points. By the way, the score of the piece is also “HP of the piece”. Note that if you are attacked by an opponent, the score of the room will decrease, and “a room with a score of 0 will disappear” (in the tutorial, there is no opponent). Connect the remaining room panels more and more. When the room panel reaches the last, a new panel is automatically replenished. Scores can be obtained not only by connecting rooms, but also by completing the “Bonus Goal” conditions at the top right of the screen. Currently, you can get 9 points in “Michievous Room X5”, so let’s aim for that. The icon at the bottom left of the screen (the tip of the orange arrow) is “passive skill”. Collecting a specific room type or performing a specific action will give you a score. The large icon below is the “Ability”, which can be activated by clicking on it (there is a limit to how many times it can be used). As a test, activate the “Nice Neighbor” ability in the “Persuasion Room”. It has the effect of giving +1 point to the surrounding rooms. In addition, there are various effects such as “+2 points for the target room” and “+1 point for the 3 rooms to be created in the future”, so let’s use it at the right time. Reach the target score of 60 points and complete the tutorial! If there is an opponent, the player who reaches the target score first wins. In addition, a piece tile is removed one by one, and when there is no place to put it, it becomes a “pass”. If you “pass” twice in a row, you lose at that moment. It’s a good idea to leave hard-to-connect parts early. Become an evil organization! Then play “Campaign”. You can select a character, but all except “Vivian” used in the previous tutorial are locked. It will be released as the game progresses, so start with Vivian. The difficulty of the game can be selected from four levels: “Easy”, “Normal”, “Hard” and “Master” (note that the difficulty cannot be changed during the campaign). Before the start of the game, a short story will unfold. Newcomer Vivian is asked by the evil boss to build an evil secret base so he can spend the summer comfortably. I feel like it’s just a resort, but let’s do that for now. Each campaign has a compensation condition, and this time it’s “get 40 points in 15 turns”. Because I put the room panels randomly, I couldn’t make the room finished than I thought, and I was able to empty it at the very last minute. There are a lot of oddly shaped parts, so if you don’t think about it, you won’t be able to install it. In the next stage, an opponent appears. It’s “Eddie”, a subordinate of the evil organization. It looks like you’re good at wielding bottles of flame. The boss tells them to build a secret base and live in the one they like. The victory condition is that the first player to reach 70 points wins. There are two starting rooms, and the orange one is Eddie. The room tiles are taken from the common pool (on the left side of the screen), so it’s first come, first served. Room panels have various effects, such as a room where enemies can attack or a self-destruct room that destroys adjacent rooms. Let’s use the things that are bad if used by the enemy as soon as possible. Set up a “cannon room”. He films the surrounding rooms. There was an opponent’s room right in the line of sight, so I damaged and destroyed it. With this, I was able to reduce the opponent’s score by 4 points. By the way, since the attack does not matter whether it is an enemy or an ally, if your piece is in the line of fire, you will take damage. Be the first to reach 70 points and win the match! Vivian’s new ability, Hidden Potential, has been unlocked. You can “activate the completion effect or the placement effect of the target room” (only once per game). Let’s carry on and secure our position in the evil organization. The minions pulling their legs the next opponent is “Emilio”. This time, the victory condition is “to survive until the end”. This step has a narrow range, so if you continue the pass without placing a piece, you will lose. More than before, you have to think carefully about the placement. Score doesn’t seem to be a factor in victory conditions, so let’s extend the room in the direction of the opponent and reduce the placement range. They will counterattack with the attack room panel, but they will overcome and win somehow! The next minion that came out was “Shaka”. The win condition for the stage seems to be quite difficult, ‘destroy six opponent’s rooms’. In addition, Shaka has the ability to strengthen materials, which can protect the room from attacks. The starting room this time is red. Although the “cannon room” was placed in the front line, no damage was done as Shaka used the aforementioned “reinforce materials” ability. In addition, since rooms with high scores are placed in the front line, it is difficult to destroy them. “Dynamite Warehouse” self-destructs as soon as it is placed, dealing 5 damage to adjacent enemy rooms. This caused an enemy piece to explode 5 points. There are 5 bedrooms left. Looks like it’s going to be long. Fight by setting up rooms to seriously attack. In the end, we first destroyed 6 rooms and managed to win. It was a very lucky battle. Next comes a three-player match. The victory condition is “Upon reaching 15 rounds, the player with the highest score wins”. I love that this game has different victory conditions. Can Vivian win? Highly Addictive Competitive Digibo This work has a high degree of perfection as a competitive game and is highly addictive. In terms of gameplay, it’s similar to Carcassonne in that you place room tiles, but you can also attack your opponent, so there’s a wide range of strategies. In a four-player match, you will be attacked from an unknown direction, and this will be a development that you cannot let your guard down. It is a work of which we understand that “There is no trial of evil that prospers” it is “because friends drag their feet and self-destruct”. In “Custom Game”, you can set detailed game rules, victory conditions, map type, etc. Not only can you play against other players via local pass play, but you can also play online using Steam’s remote play. Japanese is also supported, so if you like tile placement board games like Carcassonne, or if you like the previous game Mortal Glory, please give this game a try.
