Japan’s Emperor Emeritus Undergoes Cataract Surgery

Tokyo, Sept. 19 (Jiji Press) — Japanese Emperor Emeritus Akihito underwent cataract surgery on his left eye on Monday at Tokyo University Hospital.

The Emperor Emeritus, 88, arrived at Bunkyo Ward Hospital in Tokyo around 9:30 a.m. the same day (0030 GMT). Empress Emerita Michiko later visited the hospital to assist her husband.

The couple left the hospital around noon.

Emperor Emeritus Akihito is due to undergo cataract and glaucoma surgery in his right eye on Sunday.

An ophthalmological examination during a medical examination revealed progress in the clouding of the lenses of the Emeritus Emperor’s eyes, according to the Imperial Household Agency.
