JNTO Pres. Hopes to revive inbound tourism

Budget travel guide to Japan

Tokyo, Sept. 20 (Jiji Press)–Satoshi Seino, chairman of the National Tourism Organization of Japan, on Tuesday expressed his wish to achieve a recovery in the number of inbound tourists after Japan began easing its border restrictions related to COVID-19.

“It’s time for a fresh start,” Seino said in a speech at a rally hosted by the Research Institute of Japan, a subsidiary of Jiji Press.

Spending by foreign visitors contributes significantly to supporting Japan’s economy, Seino said, stressing the importance of attracting visitors, especially from Western countries.

Such spending is estimated to have fallen slightly above 120 billion yen in 2021, from over 4.8 trillion yen in 2019.

It was once Japan’s main source of income from overseas, second only to automobile and chemical exports, Seino said.
